Speechless…

…that’s what I am over these images! Only a few can marry floral design and art with this level of perfection, in my opinion…

Forget The Car, Give Me Flowers

It’s pretty gloomy here today and my morning got off to a great start with the ‘Check Engine’ light coming on while I was taking the kids to school. Let’s just say I wasn’t smiling when I got back to my desk…until I opened up these photos! You just can’t look at these fun, happy shots from Fuller Edge and not smile…

upimage_1250975349_877fuller edge

Look at that Reserved card! And the pink fan! And the hanging pomanders and the modern shot of the bouquet on the WHITE leather sofa (see my post from yesterday for more on my love of white) and  the locket and…

…the paper lanterns in shades of kiwi, raspberry and cherry blossom…

Thank you Fuller Edge for cheering me up today! Maybe I should take a couple of your photos along when I get the bill for the engine repair this afternoon…

Hope you all have a great weekend… with lots of sunshine and cars that run!

White on White

I’m known amongst my friends for my love of white. “Her favorite color is white,” they say with a roll of the eyes. “How can you have an all white house with boys?” they ask in amazement. (Slipcovers!) “But white isn’t even a color!” they say. When it comes to wedding flowers, white done right makes my heart flutter…

3a-2details details I also love repetition…which, I think,  makes a strong, beautiful statement.

And finally, the reception of my dreams. The draping and light fixtures are to die for and the centerpieces…oh, the centerpieces…makes me want to get a second job and get married again!

Anyone else like white on white…or do most of you prefer color?

Some Like It Hot…

Spicy…that’s how I’d describe this wedding…

The bride chose orange parrot tulips, peach hypericum berries, ‘Spicy’ roses, ‘Milva’ roses and poppy pods for her bouquet…

I do love those ‘Spicy’ roses…you can really see their bi-color in the close-up shot.

Hey, we’re halfway to the weekend! Time flies when you’re having fun…

Hanging Blooms

I’ve always had a thing for flowers used in architectural ways…

…like these roses threaded with such precision from largest to smallest bud in arrangements from Simply Blooms

Stringing flowers on filament is really quite fun and therapeutic…just tie a knot at one end and start threading on the blooms. I usually use an upholstery needle and choose the needle size based on size and fragility of the flowers. Roses, carnations, berries, mums, hyacinth blooms and orchids are easy to use and last a while. Anyone tried stringing another type of flower with success?

Preserved Roses

I’m not a huge fan of silk flowers. I prefer  fresh flowers that I can smell and watch as they mature and drop petals. However, I realize that it’s not always budget friendly to have fresh flowers in a home year round. So, after years of clients asking me to make silk arrangements, I finally came up with a compromise. I decided to make permanent arrangements as long as I could use real flowers. I was in love the first time I saw preserved roses. After all, they were once fresh and they still look fresh in an arrangement…just use your imagination on the fragrance.

coach wives dinner 015 edit~ preserved roses, dried hydrangea and found acorns nestled in a client’s urn grace a powder room used by guests ~

If you’re interested in ordering preserved roses  check out The Flower Mart.  I guess I should make it clear that these roses are not brittle like dried roses. They are treated to retain their flexibility. You will pay more for preserved roses, but it is worth it in my opinion. I can’t tell you how many people thought they were fresh in our arrangements…

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Thanks for stopping by this week…

You Can Always Count on Janice

DSC_0035cropped2

So, today I received a comment from Janice about yesterday’s post and I have to share it with you. Janice used to work with me at Bliss Flower Studio…until she got married and moved to the East Coast. A couple of things about Janice…

1.She’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever met…nothing slowed her down or kept her from doing her job…and I mean nothing!

2. She always works with a smile and an upbeat attitude.

3. She is a devoted wife and mother.

4. She was never shy about walking in the door of the studio and announcing her opinions about the flowers chosen for the wedding at hand…good OR bad!

5. I can’t remember a single time she didn’t call me on the way to work and ask if I needed anything…breakfast, Jamba Juice, or Starbucks…to get our long workday off to a great start.

6. She is ‘Martha Stewart’ caliber creative…ALWAYS thinking about how to create something new or better.

Meet Janice…

Notice she’s working in nearly all the pictures I have of her…

So anyway…back to the comment Janice left yesterday…here’s what she had to say about personalizing an arrangement…

  1. Remember when my grandfather was in the hospital (and I was hugely pregnant)and you helped me personalize an arrangement by using flowers in his college colors? That was awesome.
  2. I also love it when we include family rosaries, broaches, other personal jewelry or small framed photographs in bridal bouquets and center pieces. (see image below…I feel certain Janice is referring to this bouquet when she mentions incorporating a family rosary…we all loved this family heirloom!)
  3. The other way I've personalized an arrangement is by purchasing a piece of china the recipient is missing from her collection. I once bought various pieces of depression glass with the same pattern my great grandmother had and gave my mom arrangements that incorporated those over a series of 6 holidays. (What an awesome idea, Janice!)

We should all have the pleasure of working with someone like Janice…

Thanks for your comment and your friendship, Janice!

‘Circus’ Roses in a Tureen

To make an arrangement personal I love to shop for a special container that the recipient can use again and again…and remember the gift and giver with each use.

House Flowers 11-2-06 029 edit

…’Circus’ roses, solidago, bupleurum, green hydrangeas, orange ilex berries, smokebush and wheat in a glazed tureen…

I’d love to hear how you make your flower gifts personal! Have I mentioned how much I love comments? Have a great Tuesday…

Champagne and Aqua

The color palette for this wedding, held at a local winery, was one of my favorites…champagne and aqua.

boura5-07 048edit

And, finally, one of my favorite parts of working with brides…the personal details that set one wedding apart from another. This bride chose to remember her late mother with a magnolia blossom picked the morning of her wedding and a photograph of her mother at the sign-in table. She said magnolia blooms always reminded her of the large magnolia tree in her mother’s yard…which reminded her of her sweet mother.

For The Love Of Carnations

Carnations…love them or hate them. Actually, it’s not that simple. I don’t care for them (except I love the fragrance) unless they are standing alone in large numbers!

Friendship Bouquet

How to say “Thank you for your friendship”…

I especially like the texture of andromeda!

Well, the rain has FINALLY stopped here and I’m hoping for enough sunshine to dry up the mud so I can begin planting seed soon…larkspur, poppies, sweet peas…of course, the temp is still 85-90…tell me again why we can’t all have California weather?!

‘Flame’ Callas

I adore these ‘Hocus Pocus’ roses…maybe it’s the cool name plus the speckles that grab me! Pair them with ‘Flame’ callas and hypericum berries in a vintage cranberry glass with gold banding and you get…

Simple Freesia Bouquet

What could be simpler than gathering 20 stems of freesia and wrapping a blade of variegated spider plant around the stems to form a bouquet?

The wonderful fragrance of this bouquet is a bonus!

It’s Friday…again! The weeks fly by so quickly. Once again I want to thank you for stopping by this week. I love to hear your comments and suggestions. Really, that’s what makes blogging fun! Have a great weekend…
